HVAC Guys : How to retrofit a thermostat to a heater.?

I have a carrier modal 52sec512301aa heater/cooler, looks just like one you would see in a hotel room. It has a thermostat with a copper expansion probe, I'd like to hook up a programmable thermostat in place of that switch/probe. I was thinking some sort of relay? Thanks
